My white kids have many close asian friend who they befriended in school.Houston's Bergen County is currently seeking exceptional candidates to join our service team. Again, this is totally out of the school's control and no separation is ever driven by the school. In addition, immigrant families from the same origin country tend to befriend each other and so their children spend time together on family gatherings or in after-school programs that cater to sustain their heritage (all different kinds of immigrant groups in our area have those) which naturally will make these students gravitate towards one another in school. There are students from different countries at the ELL program and naturally they first make friends with their peers from the program who also speak their native language. There are a lot of immigrant families in our town who's children don't speak English so we have the ELL program to help them. I strongly disagree with that characteristic. Parent: I read some comments regarding race separation between white and asian students. There are some teachers that aren't especially good or understanding, and the administration is heavily biased towards sports rather than academics.Įven with all of these flaws, learning at Highlands has been overall very enjoyable, and preps for college very efficiently. Courses are very rigorous compared to other schools, and grades aren't the easiest to maintain. Our school is not very diverse at all, with extremely few students of color or first generation students. Of course there are also plenty of negatives. The school culture can be a bit dry, but it does create an environment very conducive to learning and socializing. For people who love school and learning, this is the place to go. We have acceleration courses over the summer for those who qualify, Honors and AP level courses in every subject, and even special advancement programs. I'm a very academic-heavy student, and I love that Highlands enables that very well. Junior: I've been at Highlands for a bit over 2 years now. And those of us who no longer live in Bergen County can now stream the football games! We stay connected. I am part of a network that exchanges news of Bergen Catholic sports teams with fellow alums across the country. There are opportunities for mentoring current students as well as young graduates seeking advice on their careers.įinally, BC has excellent athletic programs both for students and for alums who use them as get togethers with fellow alums. And like a family, Bergen Catholic provides many opportunities for alumni to come back to the school not only to meet old friends but also to give back. Bergen Catholic graduates have leadership roles in many diverse areas and there is always a special bond when you meet another BC alum. That is reason enough to be thankful for having gone there.īut it is also a lifetime experience. Alum: Bergen Catholic provided me with an excellent education which enabled me to get admitted to six of the best engineering schools in the country.
